PHNOM PENH,Jan. 21 (AP) – Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet convened a meeting Wednesday of the ad-hoc committee dedicated to combating online scams, signaling a critically important escalation in the nation’s efforts to curtail cybercrime.

The meeting focused on evaluating the progress achieved in the ongoing fight against online scams and formulating subsequent strategies to eradicate them, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister via social media.

Hun Manet emphasized earlier this month that suppressing cyber scams represents a crucial priority for his management, essential for maintaining peace, security, and public order throughout the country. He urged collaborative action, calling on all levels of government and citizens to actively participate in eliminating these fraudulent activities.

Cambodia has seen a surge in online scams, many originating from criminal networks operating across borders. These scams often involve job offers, romantic enticements, or investment opportunities, ultimately defrauding victims of considerable sums of money. The government’s intensified crackdown reflects a commitment to protecting its citizens and bolstering its international standing in the fight against cybercrime.

The ad-hoc committee comprises representatives from various government ministries, law enforcement agencies, and financial institutions. Their mandate includes investigating scam operations, prosecuting perpetrators, and implementing preventative measures to safeguard the public.
