Cameron Young Wins THE PLAYERS Championship in Dramatic Fashion
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Cameron Young secured his second PGA TOUR victory on Sunday, winning THE PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass after a thrilling final round that saw Ludvig Åberg falter and Matt Fitzpatrick narrowly miss a crucial putt. Young finished with a 4-under 68, totaling 13-under for the tournament, edging out Fitzpatrick by one stroke.
A Dramatic Turn of Events
The final round began with high expectations for Åberg, who held a three-shot lead. However, consecutive shots into the water on the 11th and 12th holes derailed his momentum, leading to a back-nine score of 40 and a final-round 76. This opened the door for Young and Fitzpatrick to battle for the title.
Young’s Clutch Performance
Young played a bogey-free back nine, highlighted by a crucial birdie on the par-3 17th hole, sinking a 10-foot putt to tie Fitzpatrick for the lead. He described the atmosphere at the 17th as intense, noting the pressure of performing with all eyes on him. Prior to his winning putt, Young hit a 375-yard drive on the 18th hole – the longest recorded on that hole since ShotLink data began being tracked in 2004 – setting up a straightforward par opportunity.
Fitzpatrick Falls Short
Fitzpatrick, aiming to develop into the first English golfer to win THE PLAYERS Championship, briefly seized the lead after Åberg’s struggles. However, his drive on the 18th landed in the trees, forcing him to punch out and ultimately leading to a bogey. He missed an 8-foot par putt on the final hole, which would have forced a playoff.
A Second PGA TOUR Victory
This victory marks Young’s second on the PGA TOUR, following his win at the Wyndham Championship in August 2025. He acknowledged the pressure that comes with trying to secure a win after several near misses, stating that the internal pressure he places on himself is the biggest challenge.
