Camogie Association Investigates Pitch Conditions at Clare-Wexford League Clash
The Camogie Association is investigating the circumstances surrounding the staging of last weekend’s Centra Camogie League Division 1B match between Clare and Wexford, following significant criticism of the playing surface at Meelick GAA grounds. The game was moved from its original location at Clareabbey due to an unplayable pitch.
Late Venue Change and Concerns Over Pitch Quality
The decision to relocate the match to Meelick was made at late notice, with the change announced just two hours before the scheduled 2:00 PM throw-in. However, the fresh venue proved to be problematic, with reports and photographic evidence highlighting heavy underfoot conditions, particularly around one of the goalmouths. Wexford sports journalist Dean Goodison shared images on X illustrating the poor state of the pitch.
Wexford Camogie Expresses Disappointment
Martina Donnellan, chairperson of Wexford Camogie, voiced strong concerns about the pitch conditions, stating that they posed a health and safety risk to players. “I have never seen a game go out on such a horrendous pitch. We were afraid someone was going to get injured,” Donnellan told RTÉ Sport. She also questioned why the original venue wasn’t inspected the night before or on the morning of the game, and noted that the pitch was only inspected after Wexford’s kit man alerted officials to the change of venue.
Wexford player Laura Dempsey also expressed frustration with the situation, highlighting the logistical challenges and lack of basic facilities. According to Wexford Weekly, Dempsey noted the four-hour journey from Wexford, the late venue change, and the absence of a dressing room and hot showers after the game.
Clare’s Victory and Association Response
Despite the challenging conditions, Clare secured a 0-15 to 0-09 victory over Wexford. Lorna McNamara’s free-taking proved crucial for the home side. Abby Walsh and Claire Hehir were instrumental in Clare’s performance, dominating from the half-back line.
The Camogie Association acknowledged the concerns raised and issued a statement confirming an investigation. The Association stated that it takes such concerns seriously and that player welfare is central to all decisions. They also highlighted the difficulties caused by recent bad weather and thanked county boards for their efforts in delivering the game schedule.
