Could blockbuster weight-loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy offer a surprising benefit beyond shedding pounds? Recent research suggests they may also provide relief for osteoarthritis pain.

Researchers have discovered that semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic (used for diabetes) and Wegovy (for weight loss), can significantly reduce pain associated with knee osteoarthritis. Published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine, the study revealed remarkable results.

Knee osteoarthritis, a prevalent condition affecting millions, causes chronic pain and significantly impacts quality of life. Obesity is a major risk factor for developing and worsening this degenerative joint disease.

In the groundbreaking phase 3 clinical trial, individuals with osteoarthritis who received weekly injections of semaglutide alongside diet and exercise experienced greater weight loss and pain reduction compared to those who relied solely on diet and exercise. Notably, participants saw almost a 50% decrease in knee pain.

Dr. Bob Carter, deputy director of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, highlighted the magnitude of improvement observed, stating, “The magnitude of the improvement observed is unprecedented for a drug.”

The 407 participants, predominantly women with a mean age of 56, had obesity (BMI over 30) and moderate-to-severe knee osteoarthritis pain. Researchers believe the pain relief stems from both weight loss reducing the load on the knee joints and semaglutide’s inherent anti-inflammatory properties.

Knee osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage cushioning bones wears down, leading to bone-on-bone friction, causing pain, swelling, and damage.

These findings offer hope for millions battling osteoarthritis pain. While further research is needed, these initial results suggest that weight-loss medications like Ozempic and Wegovy may provide a powerful new tool in managing osteoarthritis symptoms.
