News Wrap: Trade Talks Paused, Ceasefire Confidence, and Shutdown Funding
in today’s news, President Trump announced he is pausing trade negotiations with Canada due to a television advertisement criticizing U.S. tariffs. Secretary of State Marco Rubio voiced confidence in the ceasefire agreement between israel and Hamas, while the Pentagon confirmed acceptance of a $130 million private donation to support the military during the government shutdown.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford has agreed to pull the TV ad that prompted president Trump’s decision. The ad featured a clip from a 1987 radio address by former President Ronald Reagan arguing against trade barriers. Though, the ad omitted the context that Reagan had previously imposed tariffs himself.
President Trump responded on social media, stating, “canada cheated and got caught.” Prime Minister Mark Carney acknowledged Canada’s inability to dictate U.S. trade policy but expressed hope for resumed negotiations.
“We stand ready to pick up on that progress and build on that progress when the Americans are ready to have those discussions, because it will be for the benefit workers in the United States, workers in Canada, and families in both of our countries,” said Carney.
Prior to the controversy surrounding the ad, Carney stated his intention to double Canada’s exports to countries outside the U.S. due to President Trump’s tariffs.
Regarding the Israel-Hamas ceasefire,Secretary of State Rubio expressed optimism but cautioned that its success is critical.
“We’re all committed to making this plan work. There is no plan B. This is the best plan. It’s the only plan. it’s one that we think can succeed. It’s a plan – one that we believe it’s on the way to success,” Rubio stated during a visit to a U.S.-lead coordination center near Gaza.
He was joined by Vice President J.D. Vance and envoy Steve Witkoff, who visited the facility earlier this week. Rubio’s visit coincided with Gaza residents beginning to rebuild their lives following the ceasefire.
