The New “Cape Fear” TV Adaptation Premieres on Apple TV
The latest television adaptation of the classic psychological thriller Cape Fear has premiered on Apple TV, featuring a star-studded cast and an original score by Jeff Russo. Based on John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel The Executioners, the series reimagines the story of Max Cady, a vengeful ex-convict seeking retribution against the family that wronged him.
Cast and Creative Team
Javier Bardem stars as Max Cady, joining Patrick Wilson and Amy Adams as Tom and Anna Bowden. The series is developed by Nick Antosca, known for his work on Channel Zero and A Friend of the Family. Additional cast members include Lily Collins, Joe Anders and CCH Pounder.
Release Schedule and Reception
The first two episodes debuted on June 5, with the remaining eight episodes releasing weekly until the finale on July 31. NME’s review praised the series as a “simmering, star-filled, slow burn,” noting its adherence to the source material and the inclusion of notable musical moments.

Soundtrack and Musical Highlights
The series features an original score by Jeff Russo, who has previously worked on Fargo, Alien: Earth, and multiple Star Trek series. It also includes needle drop selections such as:
- Episode One: Allman Brothers Band – “Jessica,” The Cranberries – “Linger,” Waxahatchee – “Can’t Do Much”
- Episode Two: Charley Crockett – “Midnight Run”
Legacy of Cape Fear
The story has previously been adapted into two films: the 1962 version directed by J. Lee Thompson and the 1991 remake by Martin Scorsese. This new iteration continues the tradition of exploring themes of justice, revenge, and psychological tension.
