Capricorn 01 Zagato: A return to Pure Driving Values

The Zoute Grand Prix has unveiled the Capricorn 01 Zagato, a limited-run hypercar first teased in late September, with details now fully revealed.

Beneath its striking exterior, penned by Norihiko Harada, lies a 5.2-litre Ford V8.This isn’t a standard engine, though.Capricorn has extensively developed it with a supercharger, dry-sump lubrication, and bespoke components including the crankshaft, conrods, pistons, air intake, cooling system, and exhaust. A custom-developed ECU and mapping complete the package, resulting in over 900bhp and 737lb ft of torque. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a five-speed CIMA dogleg manual gearbox.

Capricorn claims a 0-62mph sprint in under 3.0 seconds and a top speed of 223mph, but performance figures aren’t the primary focus.

According to Capricorn CEO robertino Wild, the 01 zagato represents a return to “pure driving values.” “We had no wish to become involved in the current market trend for extremely high horsepower outputs, which are inevitably coupled with high weight due to the high degree of electronic components required to enable the driver to handle such extreme power levels,” he explains. “The Capricorn 01 Zagato produces more than 900bhp,so it has notable horsepower, but the key factor is that this is married with an ultra-lightweight engineering approach. As a result, the Capricorn 01 Zagato is a pure, analogue driver’s hypercar.”

Wild emphasizes that the car isn’t about chasing records or boasting power. Rather, the focus is on achieving an ideal power-to-weight ratio and delivering an engaging driving experience. “The car is designed for the joy of driving, not for setting records.”

The choice of a five-speed dogleg manual gearbox is deliberate. “It provides a more emotional, immersive, mechanical shifting experience that allows the driver to really feel and fully experience the rev changes, and the muscular nature of the engine working through its broad powerband. This is a decision that deliberately prioritises driver engagement and passion over the need for more gears.”

Capricorn’s background in supplying parts for high-level motorsport – including Formula 1,LMP1,WEC,and WRC – has heavily influenced the 01 Zagato’s construction. The car boasts a dry weight of 1200kg thanks to extensive use of carbonfibre for the structure, subframes, crash members, and body panels.

Brembo carbon-ceramic discs with six-piston calipers provide stopping power, paired with either 21in alloy or carbonfibre wheels. The suspension utilizes a double-wishbone pushrod system with Bilstein springs, dampers, and anti-roll bar, offering three adjustable damper settings controlled from the steering wheel.
