Dublin Runner Hospitalized After Car Accident in Sicily

Hannah Leonard, a 22-year-old from Bray, Ireland, was training for the Dublin Marathon when she was struck by a car while crossing a pedestrian crossing in Sicily. The aspiring marathoner is currently in intensive care, fighting for her recovery.

A Beloved Student’s Recovery Journey

Hannah, a former student at Loreto Bray, is widely admired within her school community. Staff and students express their deepest concern and offer unwavering support to her and her family during this difficult time. She is remembered as an exceptional student leader who actively participated in school events.

Principal Dee Ryan of Loreto Bray shared, “Hannah has always displayed a can-do attitude and exuded positivity, which will be so important during this recovery process. We are united in hoping for a speedy recovery for Hannah, and in sending her family fortitude during the tough weeks and months ahead.”

The Accident and Road to Recovery

Hannah had been working at a resort in Sicily since May and was training for the Dublin Marathon, running every evening after work. The accident occurred during her ultimate long run, just weeks before the race. Tragically, she was hit as she crossed a dual carriageway pedestrian crossing.

Her father, Kevin Leonard, recounted the incident and explained that his daughter underwent “one-shot surgery.” He added, “If it didn’t work, she wasn’t going to make it. Thankfully, obviously, the surgery worked and she got through it. But she was in an induced coma for the first week!”

Seeking to Bring Hannah Home

The family’s priority is getting Hannah back to Ireland where she can be surrounded by family and friends during her recovery. However, they face logistical challenges, including the cost of arranging both air ambulance transportation and further medical costs.

“We’re sort of hopeful that that’s definitely her responding to us,” said Kevin.

Kevin has launched a GoFundMe page to help cover the costs. To donate to Hannah’s fundraiser visit.

The fundraiser has already gathered almost €150,000, showcasing the community’s support during this difficult period.
