Cardiff Animation Festival Industry Day to Explore Play in Animation

Cardiff Animation Festival’s Industry Day returns on Thursday, April 23, at Chapter, bringing together studio leaders, freelancers, funders, commissioners, students, and emerging talent. The event will focus on the theme of “Play,” examining the ideas, innovations, and challenges shaping the animation industry today.

Focus on Industry Trends

The Industry Day program will cover a range of topics, including digital-first content strategies, feature-film development, and opportunities in game creation. It will similarly address the realities of freelance life in the animation sector.

Keynote and Panel Discussions

The day will open with a keynote address from animator, illustrator, crafter, and New York Times bestselling author Philippa Rice, who will discuss creative risk-taking, curiosity, and the importance of play in creative practice.

BAFTA-winning filmmaker Will Anderson and Camilla Deakin, Managing Director and Producer at Emmy-winning studio Lupus Films, will participate in a panel discussion titled “What does it really take to develop an animated feature in today’s UK industry?” They will share case studies on the journey from idea to screen, covering development funding, pitching, co-productions, and the challenges of feature film production.

A panel moderated by Global Distribution Consultant Laura Taylor-Williams will explore reaching audiences through digital platforms, examining various models, funding pathways, and creator strategies. Copa Gaming founder and director Osian Williams will discuss how a Welsh studio can build globally competitive intellectual property and the benefits of embracing local culture.

Jon Rennie of Cloth Cat will provide a behind-the-scenes appear at The Ghost of Midwinter, including its Moho pipeline, funding approach, bilingual production in Welsh and English, and the training model used to support emerging animators.

Practical Support for Animators

A practical “Freelance Toolkit” session, featuring CULT Cymru, will offer support for animation professionals entering the industry and navigating changing market conditions. A “Meet The Commissioners” panel will provide attendees with insights into commissioning opportunities and what broadcasters are looking for.
