Visceral fat: a harmful result of high insulin

In a September 22 episode of Teh Diary Of A CEO, dr. pradip Jamnadas, an interventional cardiologist and founder of the Heart and Vascular Institute of Central Florida, explained the connection between visceral fat and insulin. He trained at the University of London College Medical School.

Dr. Jamnadas stated that visceral fat is a direct consequence of high insulin levels. When you consistently consume carbohydrates,your insulin spikes. This forces your body to store energy as fat, and visceral fat is the first to be deposited. He emphasizes that consistently elevated insulin is the primary driver of visceral fat accumulation.

What happens when you fast?

According to Dr. Jamnadas, the fastest way to get rid of visceral fat is through fasting. He explains that when you fast, your insulin levels drop dramatically. This signals your body to start burning stored fat for energy, and visceral fat is the first fat to go.

“Within 12 hours of fasting, your insulin levels will drop,” Dr. Jamnadas said. “And when your insulin levels drop, your body starts to burn fat. And the first fat it burns is visceral fat.”

He clarifies that this doesn’t mean you need to undertake extreme or prolonged fasts. Even a 12-hour fasting window can make a critically important difference. He recommends a 12-14 hour fasting window as a good starting point for many people.
