Carnival is synonymous with party and excitement, and to enjoy it to the fullest with energy and health, some simple tips can help with mood, food safety and avoid health problems such as dehydration and food poisoning. The State Department of Health (Sesa) advises that revelers adopt basic care before, during and after the festivities.
Hydration should be an absolute priority. Don’t wait to be thirsty. Drink water consistently throughout the day. Pay attention to the color of your urine, which should always be very clear. Coconut water and natural juices help to replenish mineral salts, especially in intense heat. If you drink alcohol, consume in moderation and alternate with water to avoid dehydration, and never drink alcohol on an empty stomach.
Never go out to party fasting. To ensure energy, eat before leaving. Opt for light meals, made with real food and rich in nutrients. Consuming foods that are sources of complex carbohydrates (oats, brown rice, whole-grain pasta, sweet potatoes, cassava, beans, chickpeas), lean meats, fruits, vegetables and legumes helps keep energy stable for longer. Avoid fatty foods and fried foods, which are difficult to digest.
Pay attention to food sold on the street. Avoid foods that are raw, exposed to the sun, very fatty, very filling, with sauces or mayonnaise, as well as those foods of dubious origin or that have been left unrefrigerated for a long time, as these are those that present the greatest risk of food poisoning.
“The commitment of the State Department of Health is to promote health and well-being during festive periods as well. The adoption of basic precautions allows Carnival to be experienced safely, reducing risks and protecting the population’s health. With simple and responsible attitudes, it is possible to reconcile the party with health protection”, said the Secretary of State for Health, Beto Preto.
After so many days of revelry, the body needs recovery. Drink plenty of water and consume light, nutritious meals, increasing your intake of fruits and vegetables, to help replenish nutrients and contribute to well-being.
SPECIAL ATTENTION TO THE ELDERLY – Carnival is for everyone and the festivities have no age limit. However, revelers over the age of 60 need to take some precautions to ensure they have fun with well-being and safety.
Therefore, the nutritionist from Sesa’s Healthy Eating and Physical Activity Promotion Division, Viviane Bogasz de Melo, reaffirms the need for the precautions already mentioned, such as eating real food, hydration, wearing light clothing and being careful with alcohol consumption, but highlights some signs that should generate attention for this audience.
“You need to be aware of signs of dehydration and heat exhaustion, such as dry mouth, intense thirst, weakness, confusion or dizziness. If you notice any of these symptoms, look for a cool place and hydrate immediately. If the symptoms continue, the ideal is to seek medical help”, he advised.
