Caroline Dwane Stanley Resigns From Sinn Féin, Citing Lack of Support

Councillor Caroline Dwane Stanley, wife of former Sinn Féin TD Brian Stanley, has resigned from the party effective immediately. This announcement comes after months of what Ms. Dwane Stanley describes as a lack of support from party leadership.

Ms. Dwane Stanley was the sole Sinn Féin representative on Laois County Council. In a statement on her Facebook page Friday night, she detailed her decision to resign, stating she had given “careful consideration and reflection over the recent past.”

Lack of Communication and Support

Regrettably, the councillor revealed that she had hoped for direct engagement and support from the Sinn Féin leadership to address undisclosed matters. “However, no contact has been made by Sinn Féin leadership over the past five months,” she expressed. She further lamented that despite the party’s professed commitment to equality and supporting women in politics, “in my case this has proven to be a fallacy.”

Moving Forward as an Independent Councillor

Despite her resignation, Ms. Dwane Stanley stated her intention to continue serving as an independent republican councillor for the Portlaoise/Abbeyleix Municipal District. “Providing vigorous and effective representation,” she vowed. Her resignation from Sinn Féin marks a significant development within the party, particularly following the resignation of her husband, Brian Stanley, in October 2023.

Brian Stanley’s resignation was prompted by a party investigation into allegations lodged by a long-standing member. He vehemently denounced the process, characterizing it as lacking objectivity, impartiality, and resembling a “kangaroo court.”

This unfolding saga within Sinn Féin raises important questions about internal party dynamics, support for its members, and the handling of complaints.
