Michael Carrick Eyes Champions League Return for Manchester United

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has urged his team to capitalize on their recent form and secure Champions League qualification, ending a two-year absence from Europe’s premier club competition. United’s resurgence under Carrick has seen them win four and draw one of his five games in charge since his appointment as head coach.

Champions League Qualification: A Significant Financial Boost

A return to the Champions League could generate over £100 million for Manchester United, making Monday night’s match against Everton a crucial step towards achieving that goal. Carrick acknowledged the importance of the competition, stating, “It’s good that everyone’s asking that question. It shows that we’ve put ourselves in a good position to start with.”

Carrick, a 2008 Champions League winner under Sir Alex Ferguson, emphasized the club’s desire to compete at the highest level. “It’s where we aim for to be. We’ve had success in this competition before, and some great experiences. For all sorts of different reasons, it’s where we want to be. So it’s definitely what we’re pushing for,” he said.

Maintaining Perspective and Focusing on Improvement

Despite the positive momentum, Carrick cautioned against complacency. “We’re not getting too carried away now all of a sudden after a few weeks. We know where we’re at, we’re in a good position. I’d still like to be in a better position, mind you, but we’re in a good position,” he explained.

Relationship with Sir Jim Ratcliffe

The two-week break since United’s last game, a 1-1 draw at West Ham, was partially overshadowed by comments made by minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe regarding immigration. Carrick revealed he hadn’t spoken with Ratcliffe since their meeting after the Arsenal game a month prior, but expressed confidence in the team’s unity.

“We’re definitely all pulling together, I think. Being around here and being in stadiums in the last few weeks, and certainly in this environment, quite closely, it’s clear as you could ever be it’s pulling together, so we’re pretty strong as a group,” Carrick stated. He added, “The last time I saw Jim was Arsenal, to be honest, and I’m fine with that. I don’t think there’s anything that I need in terms of constant communication from above.”

Carrick reiterated his focus on fostering a positive environment within the team. “My role is to create the environment within the group, and obviously lead in terms of the first team and beyond that. I don’t necessarily need it from above to be constant.”

Carrick Praises Casemiro’s Impact

Carrick also highlighted the significant contribution of midfielder Casemiro, who is set to leave United at the end of the season. He said, “Cas has been fantastic since I came in really, on and off the pitch. Experience is a great thing if you use it in the right way.” ESPN

Michael Carrick is currently the head coach of Manchester United, having previously managed Middlesbrough from 2022-2025.
