The Carson City Senior Center offers a vibrant calendar of activities designed to enrich the lives of local seniors. Throughout the remainder of July, attendees can look forward to captivating presentations and a unique cinematic experience.

Spotlight on Adventure & Culture

This month’s programming highlights both the natural beauty of Nevada and the rich cultural heritage of the American West. Thes events provide opportunities for learning, connection, and enjoyment.

Exploring Nevada’s Wild Side with Chris Orr

On Tuesday, july 15th at 12:30 p.m., the Senior center will host Chris Orr, the esteemed host and Senior Producer of PBS Reno’s long-running series, “Wild Nevada.” For over two decades, “wild Nevada” has captivated audiences with it’s stunning visuals and engaging exploration of the Silver State’s diverse landscapes and outdoor adventures.The program now reaches over 200 PBS stations nationwide, demonstrating its widespread appeal.

Orr’s presentation promises an insightful look behind the scenes of the show and a chance to hear firsthand accounts of his journeys across Nevada. The event will be held in the Joshua Tree room (east end) at the Carson City Senior Center, located at 911 Beverly Drive.No RSVP is required, and further details are available by calling (775) 883-0703.

A Toast to Tradition: Discovering “Piconland” with Mark Maynard

On Friday, July 25th at 12:30 p.m., the Senior Center welcomes local author and filmmaker Mark Maynard. Maynard will present his critically acclaimed documentary, “Piconland,” a fascinating exploration of the Picon cocktail and its significance within the Basque communities of the American West.

Maynard’s work has been featured in numerous publications, including This Side of the Divide, Tahoe Blues, and The Films of Clint Eastwood. “piconland” offers a compelling glimpse into a unique cultural tradition and the stories of the immigrants who brought it to life. like the Orr presentation, this event will take place in the Joshua Tree room and is free to attend, with no RSVP necessary. Bingo Update & Volunteer opportunities

The Senior Center’s popular Bingo program is currently experiencing a temporary pause for Sunday games due to a need for additional volunteers. This allows the center to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for all participants. Thursday Bingo remains unaffected, but additional volunteer callers are needed to cover upcoming absences. If you are interested in contributing your time and skills, please contact Courtney to learn more about volunteer opportunities. According to a recent study by VolunteerMatch, senior centers nationwide consistently report a need for dedicated volunteers to support their programming.

Senior Transportation Assistance

Don’t forget about the JAC Senior bus Pass, offering free transportation for seniors throughout the area. This valuable resource promotes independence and accessibility for Carson City’s senior population.
