Catching the bus can be a jarring experience. Engine shudders, accelerating and braking jolts passengers in their seats. Fortunately, researchers say solutions exist to make the ride smoother.
## The Problem: Bus Vibration and its Impact
Dr. Anna Lidfors Lindqvist, an engineer at the University of Technology Sydney, explained that bus passengers experience “whole body vibrations” from the engine and bumpy roads, as well as jolts from drivers navigating traffic.
“If you’ve caught the bus, especially in the city, you can sometimes experience a bumpy ride,” she said.
The study by Lidfors Lindqvist and her team measured vibrations on 30 Sydney routes, publishing the results in Nature.
“Jerk” was a key cause of passenger discomfort, when the bus brakes and accelerates – a problem in Sydney during peak hour.
## Solutions for a Smoother Ride
Dr. Lidfors Lindqvist said better suspension and seat design could help dampen the bouncing during start-stop movements, benefiting older people at risk of injury from jolts.
Installing bus driver seats, or those used in coaches, would yield better comfort and safety over bench-style typically found on buses.
Monitoring driver behavior could also lessen jolts, and may even benefit fuel consumption.
## The Public Transport Perspective
Dr. Iain Lawrie, a transport academic, said buses are often considered the poor cousin of public transport compared to trains and trams.
