Celebrating Liberty: A Reflection on American Independence

The spirit of freedom and self-governance was palpable as we gathered to commemorate the 249th anniversary of American Independence. This event serves not merely as a celebration, but as a moment for thoughtful consideration of the principles upon which the United States was founded. We are especially grateful for the presence of distinguished guests who embody the strong ties between our nations, including Honorable minister of Petroleum and natural Gas, hardeep singh Puri, and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Bethany Morrison, alongside Riley Barnes and Shireen Singh from the State Department. This gathering wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of our sponsors, whose contributions are deeply appreciated. We encourage attendees to explore the sponsor booths, offering a taste of American innovation and culinary delights. A sincere thank you also extends to the dedicated team at the embassy, led by alex White and Mike Cramer, whose tireless efforts brought this evening to fruition, and to all the volunteers who have contributed their time and energy.

On a personal note, I’d like to acknowledge the unwavering support of my wife, Sara Craig, and our daughter, Dagny, who are visiting from Virginia. It’s often said that success is built on a foundation of support, and in my case, Sara’s encouragement has been invaluable. As we approach the milestone of 250 years of independence next year, it’s crucial to remember that Independence Day is a time for both jubilation and critical self-assessment.

The core tenet of American independence, articulated in the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, is the concept of popular sovereignty – the idea that governmental authority originates from the people it governs. This revolutionary principle, a direct outcome of Enlightenment thought, fundamentally shifted the relationship between rulers and the ruled. The framers of the Constitution, led by Thomas Jefferson, skillfully constructed a system of checks and balances, distributing power across three equal branches of government to prevent tyranny and ensure accountability.

My own connection to these foundational ideals runs deep. Having had the privilege of studying law at the University of Virginia, founded by Thomas Jefferson himself, I experienced firsthand the intellectual surroundings he envisioned. Jefferson’s “academical village” was designed to foster critical thinking and a commitment to civic virtue – principles that remain central to the American experiment. Today, the United States faces new challenges, from navigating a complex global landscape to addressing domestic issues like economic inequality and social justice.Though, the enduring principles of liberty, self-governance, and the pursuit of a more perfect union continue to guide us. As we celebrate this anniversary, let us reaffirm our commitment to these ideals, not onyl for ourselves but for future generations.
