Central Indiana Weather: Record Warmth, Severe Storms, and a Return to Winter
Central Indiana is bracing for a dramatic shift in weather conditions this week, experiencing a rare stretch from near-record high temperatures to potential severe storms and even snow within a six-day period. Residents should prepare for a volatile forecast as the region navigates this unusual weather pattern.
Record-Breaking Warmth on Wednesday
Wednesday, February 18th, is expected to bring exceptionally warm temperatures to Indianapolis and surrounding areas. Forecasts predict a high of 69 degrees Fahrenheit, potentially breaking the daily record of 66 degrees set in 2017. This temperature is a remarkable 27 degrees above the average high of 42 degrees for mid-February and would mark only the 14th time in recorded history that Indianapolis has reached 69 degrees or warmer so early in the season. The last time such warmth occurred was in 1999. WTHR
Severe Storm Potential on Thursday
The unseasonable warmth will be short-lived, as a significant storm system is expected to move through on Thursday, bringing the potential for severe weather. Central and southern Indiana are currently under a Level 2 out of 5 severe risk. The primary threats include a strong wind field, unseasonably moist air, and increasing low-level wind shear, which could lead to rotating thunderstorms. WTHR, WRTV
Two rounds of storms are possible on Thursday: the first in the morning (4 a.m. – 11 a.m.) with the potential for hail, and the second in the afternoon and evening (3 p.m. – midnight) with a risk of rotating thunderstorms. WTHR
A Dramatic Cool-Down and Weekend Snow
A cold front will sweep through Thursday night, bringing a sharp drop in temperatures. Friday will see highs only in the mid-40s, with gusty winds making it sense even colder. WRTV
The weekend will bring even colder air, with the potential for snow showers developing late Saturday into Sunday. Highs on Sunday and Monday are expected to be in the 30s, with wind chills falling into the 20s. WRTV
