Leading Cheltenham Hope Saint Clovis Dies Suddenly
A promising contender for the Cheltenham Festival, Saint Clovis, has tragically died during a routine gallop at Tom Cooper’s yard in County Kerry, Ireland. The four-year-ancient gelding was a leading fancy for the Weatherbys Champion Bumper, with odds as low as 14-1.
The news, confirmed on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, has been described as a “massive blow” to the small stable and connections. Saint Clovis had impressed with a victory in a Listed bumper at Cheltenham’s November meeting, a race whose form has proven strong, with several subsequent winners emerging from the field. Racing Post reports that A Likeable Rogue, who finished fourth in that race, recently won a Listed bumper at Newbury by nine lengths and Onlyforfrankie, seventh in the same race, is now rated 130 over hurdles.
Promising Career Cut Short
Trainer Tom Cooper had hoped Saint Clovis would follow in the footsteps of Total Enjoyment, who won the Champion Bumper for the stable in 2004. The young horse was being carefully prepared for a tilt at the prestigious Cheltenham race, but will now not have the opportunity to fulfill his potential. The Mirror highlighted the impact of this loss on the smaller yard, which rarely sends out more than ten jumps winners a season.
Devastation from Jockey and Trainer
Bryan Cooper, Gold Cup-winning jockey and son of trainer Tom Cooper, expressed his profound sadness. “Unfortunately, we lost Saint Clovis on the gallops the other morning,” he told the Racing Post. “I’m absolutely distraught for Dad and Andrew [Brooks, owner] because he had such a big future ahead. He had so much potential.”
Cooper added that Saint Clovis was a particularly valuable horse for their stable, and his loss is keenly felt. The horse was owned by Andrew Brooks.
Champion Bumper Implications
Saint Clovis’s untimely death removes a significant contender from the Champion Bumper field. The race, a key event at the Cheltenham Festival, will now see a reshuffling of the odds and increased focus on other promising horses. Dublin City FM likewise reported on the tragic passing.
