Chantelle Cameron Eyes Welterweight Showdowns with Mayer and Price

Former undisputed super-lightweight champion Chantelle Cameron is setting her sights on the welterweight division’s top contenders, Mikaela Mayer and Lauren Price, after securing a WBO super-welterweight title eliminator against Michaela Kotaskova on April 5th.

Cameron’s Welterweight Ambitions

Cameron, who previously held the undisputed title at super-lightweight, is eager to challenge for world honors at 147lbs. She anticipates a battle between Mayer and Price to determine the undisputed welterweight champion and intends to position herself as the next challenger.

“One of them’ is going to become undisputed and I’m going to be on their tail as well because I want to be in those big fights, big nights and challenge myself,” Cameron stated to Three FM. “I will take those kind of fights and make my own history and my own legacy.”

Respect for Mayer and Price

While Cameron is keen to face both Mayer and Price, she expresses particular admiration for Mayer. “I’m a massive fan of Mayer. I really am, even though I’d like to fight her. She knows I want to fight her, it’s respectful,” Cameron said. She believes Mayer has been “hard done by” in previous fights, referencing her bout with Natasha Jonas and her contest against Alycia Baumgardner.

Cameron added, “I hope she becomes undisputed, and I hope I take them belts off her.”

Regarding Price, Cameron acknowledges her Olympic gold medal and skill set. “Lauren’s very decent. Lauren’s a hard night for everyone. Her style, she’s very good. She won an Olympic gold medal so credit to her. I think it’ll be a 50-50 fight, I really do.”

Preference for a Mayer Matchup

Despite respecting both fighters, Cameron believes a fight against Mayer would be particularly compelling. “I do think me and Mayer make a better fight. I sense like me and Mayer’s styles gel. Me and Mayer really gel and I feel like we’d be fight of the year,” she explained.

Cameron also highlighted the potential for a competitive fight regardless of belt status. “Styles make fights as well. It doesn’t matter if you win, lose, [are a] champion, non-champion. If you’ve got a good style that’s going to gel, that’s going to make a good fight, that’s what you necessitate for women’s boxing. You need the good fights.”

Looking Ahead

Cameron’s immediate focus is on her April 5th fight against Michaela Kotaskova, live on Sky Sports. A victory will propel her closer to realizing her ambition of challenging for the welterweight title and facing either Mikaela Mayer or Lauren Price.
