- The defense must line up 10 yards away from the ball, resembling more of a kickoff formation than a typical field goal attempt.
- Crucially, the defense cannot attempt to block the free kick.
Essentially, with this rule, the receiving team gets a do-over on a field goal attempt, potentially earning three points from a seemingly impossible position.
How the Chargers Pulled It Off
Denver was facing a fourth-and-12 from their own 16-yard line. With a punt seemingly inevitable, Chargers returner Derius Davis called for a fair catch. However, the Broncos committed a fair-catch interference penalty, pushing the ball back to their 47-yard line. This unexpected turn of events suddenly set the stage for Cameron Dicker’s attempt at the unconventional kick.
Dicker successfully drilled the field goal, becoming the first player since 1976 to make a fair-catch kick in the NFL. His game-changing kick trimmed Denver’s lead to 21-13 at halftime.
A Rare Occurrence
The fair-catch kick is incredibly rare, with only a handful of successful attempts in NFL history. The last time it had been attempted before Thursday night was in 2019.
