Teenager Released Without Charge in Murder of Irish Restaurateur Shaun Brady
A teenager facing charges in the Kansas City murder of Shaun Brady, the popular Irish restaurateur fatally shot outside his premises in August, has been released without charge. The development comes as a relief to both the teenager and the community grappling with the loss of the much-loved restaurateur.
Tragedy in Kansas City’s Irish Community
Shaun Brady, originally from Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, was gunned down outside his bustling restaurant, Brady’s KC, in the Brookside area of Kansas City. The shooting, which occurred while Mr. Brady was carrying rubbish, shocked the city’s strong Irish-American community. He was the 104th murder victim in Kansas City that year.
Miscarriage of Justice Avoided?
The teenager, identified as LM, had been held in custody since the fatal shooting. A second teenage male, identified as KH, remains in custody facing charges.
Attorney Matthew Merryman, representing LM, asserted that a miscarriage of justice had been avoided. “What I’m saying is that they got the wrong kid,” Merryman stated, according to the Kansas City Star and a city news broadcast outlet. “When the public outrage is so high, there is a rush to find someone and hold them accountable. Here there was a rush to judgment and LM was just the first black kid they found to pin that judgment on.”
Complicated Legal Proceedings
A decision has yet to be made regarding whether KH will be tried as a juvenile or an adult. A hearing scheduled for later this month will determine his future.
Community Response and Community Support
The death of Shaun Brady deeply impacted the Kansas City community, particularly its Irish population. The annual IrishFest, a major music and food festival, was held just days after the tragedy.
The local Kansas community rallied around Mr. Brady’s family, raising over $160,000 in support shortly after his death.
Molly Scanlon, a criminal defense paralegal in Kansas City and a friend of Mr. Brady, shared her thoughts: “I think anybody who knew and loved Shaun would be happy that the wrong person is not sitting in jail. Shaun was a wonderful man and is greatly missed here and we continue to grieve for his family.”
Remembering Shaun Brady
Mr. Brady’s wife, Kate, from Wichita, and their two children, Seamus (12) and Mary (10), are left to mourn the loss of a loving husband and father. His legacy as a cherished member of the Kansas City community will live on.
