Disney+ Reveals New Original Series Lineup for 2024, Expanding Marvel and Star Wars Content
Disney+ has announced its new original series lineup for 2024, with a focus on expanding its Marvel and Star Wars franchises, according to a statement released on October 12, 2023. The streaming service, which reported 168 million global subscribers as of July 2023, will debut five new series, including two Marvel projects and three Star Wars titles, as part of its strategy to compete with Netflix and Hulu.
Marvel Series to Feature New Characters and Expanded Universes
The first new Marvel series, Secret Invasion, will follow the events of the 2021 film Spider-Man: No Way Home, with Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury leading a secret mission to uncover a Skrull infiltration, according to Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige. The show will air in spring 2024 and is expected to introduce new characters, including a reimagined version of the superhero Ms. Marvel, as reported by Variety.
A second Marvel series, Deadpool & Wolverine, will combine the X-Men characters into a single project, marking the first time the duo has shared a lead role in a television series. The show’s production began in August 2023, with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman confirmed to reprise their roles, according to The Mary Sue.
Star Wars Series to Explore Untold Stories and New Planets
The three new Star Wars series include The Acolyte, a mystery series set during the High Republic era, and Andor, a spin-off focusing on the origins of the Rebel Alliance. A third project, Young Jedi Adventures, will target younger audiences with a focus on training Jedi Knights, as revealed in a press conference on October 10, 2023.
The Acolyte will explore the rise of a new Sith Lord, while Andor will follow the character Cassian Andor, portrayed by Diego Luna, as he joins the Rebellion. Both series are set to premiere in 2024, with The Acolyte scheduled for May and Andor in September, according to StarWars.com.
Competition in the Streaming Wars Intensifies
Disney+’s 2024 lineup comes as streaming platforms face increasing competition. Netflix has announced 20 original series for 2024, including a Lord of the Rings prequel, while Hulu is expanding its Marvel content with a new WandaVision spin-off. Analysts note that Disney+’s focus on established franchises gives it an edge in retaining subscribers, according to a Bloomberg report from October 2023.

However, concerns about content saturation have emerged. A Pew Research Center survey found that 42% of streaming users feel overwhelmed by the number of available shows, raising questions about how Disney+ will balance its slate with quality control.
What’s Next for Disney+ in 2024?
Disney+ plans to release a total of 12 original series in 2024, including adaptations of Star Wars novels and new Marvel films. The service will also debut a live-action Aladdin series, with Mena Suvari confirmed to reprise her role as Jasmine, according to IGN. The company has not yet announced release dates for all projects, but executives have emphasized a “strategic rollout” to avoid overwhelming viewers.
As the streaming wars continue, Disney+’s 2024 strategy highlights its reliance on established intellectual property. With the success of Stranger Things and The Mandalorian, the platform aims to solidify its position as a leader in original content, according to Rolling Stone.
