Kansas City Chiefs Dominate San Francisco 49ers in Rematch, Remain Undefeated
The Kansas City Chiefs solidified their position as the NFL’s last undefeated team, defeating the San Francisco 49ers 28-18 in a rematch of Super Bowl LVIII. The victory marks the Chiefs’ third-largest undefeated streak since 2000 and the longest during the Patrick Mahomes-Andy Reid era. Despite Mahomes throwing for just 154 yards and two interceptions, the Chiefs’ dominant rushing attack proved decisive.
Mahomes’ 33-yard touchdown run, the longest of his career, highlighted Kansas City’s ground game, which produced four touchdowns, their highest output since the 2019 season opener. Meanwhile, the Chiefs’ defense stifled the 49ers, forcing three interceptions, the first time Kansas City achieved this feat since 2020. Brock Purdy, plagued by pressure, completed only 17 of 31 passes for 212 yards and three interceptions.

Adding to the 49ers’ woes, injuries decimated their receiving corps. Christian McCaffrey, Jauan Jennings, Brandon Aiyuk, and Deebo Samuel were all sidelined, forcing the 49ers to rely heavily on their running backs and George Kittle. Despite the challenges, Kittle led all 49ers receivers with six receptions for 92 yards, while Jordan Mason rushed for 58 yards, the most allowed by the Chiefs to a running back this season.
Frustrations boiled over late in the game, culminating in altercations between players from both teams. 49ers cornerback Deommodore Lenoir engaged in a scuffle with Chiefs offensive lineman Wanya Morris, followed by 49ers tackle Trent Williams’ ejection for throwing a punch at Chiefs safety Bryan Cook.
Chiefs Defense Rises to the Occasion
Kansas City’s defensive performance proved pivotal. Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s aggressive blitzing strategy effectively pressured Purdy, leading to three interceptions. Each interception occurred in Chiefs territory, thwarting potential 49ers scoring drives. Undrafted rookie cornerback Chris Roland-Wallace, stepping in for injured Jaylen Watson, recorded his first career interception, capitalizing on Spagnuolo’s blitz pressure. Rookie safety Jaden Hicks added another interception, sealing the Chiefs’ victory.
49ers Struggle with Depth Issues and Preparation
Despite having 10 days to prepare, the 49ers appeared unprepared, struggling offensively and defensively. Purdy struggled early, failing to establish a rhythm, and penalties hampered their progress. Meanwhile, the defense appeared slow to react to Kansas City’s personnel groupings, leading to missed assignments and penalties. Special teams, typically a reliable unit, faltered, giving up a costly punt return.
