China’s Ministry of State Security (MSS) has announced the arrest of a Chinese official whom it accuses of spying for the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). According to the portfolio, the detainee is an official of 39 years oldsurname Haowho was “recruited by the United States Central Intelligence Agency while studying at Japan“.
The MSS asserts in a statement that an official from the United States embassy in that country contacted Hao until he gained his trust through invitations to dinners and gifts. “Before finishing your studies abroad, was officially recruited by a member of the CIA and signed an agreement to spy for the United States“adds the MSS.
According to the statement, Hao started working in a ministry – without specifying which one – after returning to China, and “met with CIA personnel in China on several occasions to offer them information in exchange for money.”
China arrested another suspected Chinese spy earlier this month who was also contacted by an official from the United States embassy in Italy.
The Asian country has intensified its fight against espionage in recent months and has enacted a anti-espionage law that prohibits the transfer of any information related to national security and its interests, without specifically defining them.
