Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo Reunite in Tense Heist Thriller ‘Crime 101’
Crime 101, the new crime thriller from Amazon MGM Studios, features a tense reunion between Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo, where the actors showcase their dramatic range after their comedic collaborations in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Based on Don Winslow’s 2020 novella of the same name, the film explores themes of morality, ageism, and the blurred lines between right, and wrong.
Plot and Characters
Chris Hemsworth stars as Mike Davis, a meticulous jewel thief known for avoiding violence and leaving no trace. Mark Ruffalo plays Lou, an LAPD detective determined to capture Mike after a $3 million diamond heist. Their paths collide, leading to a complex dynamic fueled by both professional rivalry and a pre-existing rapport. Halle Berry portrays Sharon, an insurance broker facing age discrimination who unexpectedly becomes entangled with Mike, while Barry Keoghan plays Ormon, a volatile thief who challenges Mike’s carefully laid plans.
Behind the Scenes
Director Bart Layton emphasized the strong connection between Hemsworth and Ruffalo, noting their “shorthand” and “love” for each other made for a natural on-set dynamic. However, Layton also revealed that the actors became “intimidated” by each other when performing intense scenes, pushing them to deliver their best performances. “When they got into the scenes… I reckon they suddenly felt like, ‘Here’s Chris in a very dramatic scene, opposite one of the great screen actors of his generation,’” Layton told Gold Derby.
Differences from the Novella
While the film adapts Don Winslow’s acclaimed novella, director Bart Layton made deliberate changes to the story. Layton hopes fans of the book will appreciate these differences, while still recognizing the core elements they enjoyed. Notably, the film’s ending deviates from the book, though Layton assures it won’t be a shocking departure. “I don’t think there’s going to be any big shocks. Hopefully there’s going to be some pleasant additions and, at the same time, enough of a faithful adherence to the stuff that was in the book,” he stated.
Themes and Moral Ambiguity
Crime 101 delves into the complexities of morality, questioning the motivations behind actions and challenging conventional notions of good and evil. Layton aimed to leave audiences pondering these questions, asking “Why are you doing what you do?” and “Are you doing it for yourself, or are you doing it for the benefit of how other people might perceive you?” The film avoids simplistic portrayals of heroes and villains, prompting viewers to consider the systemic factors that contribute to criminal behavior.
Release and Reception
Crime 101 premiered in London on January 28, 2026, and was released in the United States on February 13, 2026, by Amazon MGM Studios. It has grossed $28 million worldwide on a $90 million budget. The film received positive reviews from critics, with many praising the performances of Hemsworth and Ruffalo.
