The Legacy of MEGADETH’s Guitarists: Poland, Friedman, and Loureiro
The world of heavy metal has long been shaped by the virtuosity of guitarists, and few bands embody this truth better than MEGADETH. Through a series of interviews, former guitarists Chris Poland, Marty Friedman, and Kiko Loureiro have shed light on their experiences in the band, their admiration for one another, and the unique challenges of stepping into such a legendary lineup.
Chris Poland’s Favorite MEGADETH Guitarists
In a recent interview with Greg Prato of Ultimate Guitar, Chris Poland was asked to name his favorite MEGADETH guitarists, excluding himself. His response was both candid and insightful: “I like Marty Friedman, what he brought to MEGADETH. But I think Kiko was my favorite of everyone. I just liked the way he played probably better than anybody. But Marty would be a close second.”
Poland’s admiration for Loureiro highlights the Brazilian guitarist’s unique ability to blend technical precision with emotional depth, a quality that has made him a standout in the band’s storied history.
Marty Friedman’s Outlook on his Predecessors and Successors
Marty Friedman, who joined MEGADETH in 1990, also shared his thoughts on the band’s guitar lineage in a 2023 interview with Ultimate Guitar. When asked about his favorite guitarists before or after him, Friedman admitted, “After I left MEGADETH, I didn’t really follow a few of the guys that they had after me. I’m sure they were fantastic because that’s just the kind of band it is. but if I think of other MEGADETH guitarists, I think of how Chris Poland was in the band before I was in it.”
Friedman’s respect for Poland is evident, though he humorously recounted the challenges of trying to replicate Friedman’s style: “I hated copying [Chris’s] stuff, I couldn’t do it. It was just too alien. Like any supermusician, they’ve got their own stamp on it and there’s way for one person to step into that other person’s shoes. It’s unfeasible. I love his playing. I hated trying to copy that. just a super, super guitarist, and a great guy, too. We toured together once.”
