Christian Eriksen has left VfL Wolfsburg by mutual consent, three months after collapsing during an international match, according to reports from multiple news outlets including The Independent. The 34-year-old midfielder and the German club agreed to part ways ahead of schedule, ending a contract that was originally set to run until June 2027.
Departure From Wolfsburg and Return to Denmark
Eriksen spent one season with Wolfsburg after joining the club as a free agent, making 34 appearances across all competitions, scoring three goals, and providing 10 assists while serving as team captain. Despite his contributions, the club suffered a historic first relegation from the German top flight in 29 years via the play-offs. According to statements reported by The Independent, Eriksen expressed a desire to return to his homeland for personal reasons following his exit.
“At the moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark,” Eriksen said, as reported by The Independent. “I’m pleased that we were able to find a solution together.”
Wolfsburg Managing Director Sport Dieter Hecking stated that the club chose to accommodate the player’s wishes given the circumstances. “For us, it was clear that the decision about his future had to be Christian’s,” Hecking said, according to The Independent. “We wanted to give him that freedom in this particular situation and have now agreed to his request to terminate the contract.”
Medical Incidents and Career Background
The contract termination follows a medical emergency in June, when Eriksen collapsed on the pitch during an international friendly between Denmark and Ukraine. According to The Independent, his implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) detected a dangerous arrhythmia and delivered a corrective shock. He briefly lost consciousness before walking off the field and receiving hospital treatment.
The episode occurred five years after Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s Euro 2020 group stage match against Finland in June 2021, where his heart stopped for approximately five minutes before teammate Simon Kjaer administered CPR and a defibrillator was used on the pitch in Copenhagen. Prior to joining Wolfsburg, Eriksen’s professional career included spells at Ajax Amsterdam, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan, and Manchester United.
