Christian Nodal Considers Return to Universal Music Amidst Family Dispute
Mexican singer Christian Nodal is reportedly in negotiations to rejoin Universal Music, potentially ending a years-long legal battle and severing professional ties with his father and manager, Jaime González. This development comes as Nodal seeks to resolve outstanding legal conflicts and gain independence from his family.
Legal Battles with Universal Music
The dispute between Nodal and Universal Music began in November 2021 when the singer, along with his parents, filed a lawsuit seeking ownership of the rights to his first three albums: “I Let Me Go” (2017), “Now” (2019), and “AYAYAY!” (2020). Universal Music countered, asserting its ownership based on existing contracts.
The record label accused Nodal and his parents of submitting 32 documents with forged signatures in an attempt to falsely claim ownership of the songs. This led to a criminal complaint against the family.
Conflict with His Father
Simultaneously, Nodal has been attempting to gain professional independence from his father, Jaime González. Reports indicate that González threatened Nodal with a contract extending until 2035 when the singer expressed his desire to end their professional relationship.
The conflict between father and son escalated to the point where they separated legal representation during the case against Universal Music.
Potential Mediation by Pepe Aguilar
Rumors suggest that Pepe Aguilar, Nodal’s father-in-law, has been involved in the family dispute, encouraging Nodal to separate completely from Jaime González.
Recent Court Appearance and Outcome
In November 2023, Christian Nodal and his parents appeared at the Reclusorio Preventivo Varonil Oriente in Mexico City for a hearing related to the accusations of document forgery. However, they were not charged with the alleged crime of falsifying signatures. Nodal stated that the judge found no evidence of falsification.
Negotiations with Universal Music
Despite previous attempts to demand restrictions on Nodal’s music distribution and performance without Universal Music’s consent, negotiations for his return to the label are reportedly underway. The singer’s strategy is believed to be to “create peace” with Universal Music to resolve all legal conflicts and achieve full independence.
As of March 15, 2026, Nodal has not made any official statements regarding these negotiations.
