Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy brought his latest film, Small Things Like These, to Dublin for its Irish premiere, expressing hope that the movie will spark meaningful conversations.

Nine months after its successful debut at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it received critical acclaim, the cast and crew gathered on the red carpet, eager to share the film with their home audience.

Based on Claire Keegan’s Booker-shortlisted 2021 story, Small Things Like These marks Murphy’s first on-screen role since his historic Oscar win for Best Actor earlier this year in Oppenheimer.

“The book haunted me after I read it. It is a masterpiece, so I’m so glad we were able to gather such talent around us to help tell this story,” Murphy shared.

Set in Ireland, the film follows Bill Furlong, a coal merchant played by Murphy, who stumbles upon a disturbing scene at the local Magdalene laundry.

Critics have lauded the film for its powerful exploration of a dark chapter in Irish history, praising its nuanced storytelling and impactful performances. Emily Watson, who portrays Sister Mary, earned Best Supporting Performance at the Berlin Film Festival for her captivating portrayal.

A passion project for Murphy, Small Things Like These is produced alongside Alan Moloney at Big Things Productions. The film boasts an impressive roster of producers, including Hollywood heavyweights Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

Cillian Murphy reunited with longtime collaborator Enda Walsh, who adapted Keegan’s story into a compelling screenplay.

Eileen Walsh, who plays Murphy’s wife, shared her excitement about bringing the film home: “It was first shown nine months ago in Berlin, so we’ve been waiting to bring it here. It means so much to us to finally bring it home and to be here in Dublin.”

Walsh echoed Murphy’s sentiments about the film’s potential to spark important conversations. “The book had started this discussion about these issues, and we really hope the film will continue that,” she said.

Co-producer Alan Moloney expressed hope that the film will provoke debate and provide a platform for healing. “It’s a Christmas film, so it’s the right time for it to be on here in Ireland,” Moloney added.

The premiere at Dublin’s LightHouse cinema drew a star-studded audience, including Cillian Murphy, Eileen Walsh, Zara Devlin, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and members of the film’s cast.

Don’t miss Small Things Like These, opening in cinemas nationwide on Friday, November 1st.
