Cillian Murphy Reflects on Helen McCrory’s Legacy as ‘Peaky Blinders’ Returns

Cillian Murphy has spoken movingly about the late Helen McCrory, praising her as “one of the greatest human beings and one of the greatest actors” he’s ever encountered. Murphy’s comments arrive ahead of the release of the Peaky Blinders spin-off film, The Immortal Man, where writer Steven Knight has thoughtfully incorporated elements to honor McCrory’s memory.

Honoring Polly Gray

McCrory, who powerfully portrayed the Shelby family matriarch Polly Gray in the hit BBC drama Peaky Blinders for five seasons (2013-2021), tragically passed away from cancer in 2021 at the age of 52. The series concluded with its sixth season in 2022, but is now being revisited with the new film.

Murphy expressed his appreciation for Knight’s dedication to keeping McCrory’s presence alive within the Peaky Blinders universe. “I love the way Steve has kept her memory and her character’s memory alive throughout this – particularly in series six and the film,” he told LADbible. He described McCrory as a “dear friend” and acknowledged the profound loss felt by everyone who knew her.

‘The Immortal Man’ and the Shelby Saga

The Immortal Man sees Tommy Shelby, played by Murphy, return from self-imposed exile against the backdrop of World War II. The film will delve into the complex relationship between Tommy and Erasmus ‘Duke’ Shelby, his illegitimate son, portrayed by Barry Keoghan.

The film is expected to continue the themes of family, loyalty, and the consequences of violence that defined the original series, while also serving as a poignant tribute to Helen McCrory’s indelible contribution to the Peaky Blinders legacy.
