A Northern Iowa football player and Iowa City native has died after reports of a medical emergency earlier this week.

Parker Sutherland passed away Saturday morning, according to a release from UNI Athletics. The 18-year-old was just ten days shy of his 19th birthday.

“I’m heartbroken,” UNI head football coach Todd Stepsis said in a statement. “No words can express my condolences to Adam, Jill and Georgia. Parker embodied everything we look for in a UNI Football Panther. His talent and potential excited us on a daily basis, but it failed to compare to the type of person and teammate he was. His character, humility, toughness and genuine love of others are what champions are made of. While I’m saddened that our time together was short, we will celebrate the bright light that he brought to our football team for the rest of our lives.”

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reported on Thursday that Cedar Falls Fire & Rescue had responded to an incident at UNI’s athletics facility. Multiple sources tell Iowa’s News Now that Sutherland collapsed during a workout that day.

Sutherland was entering his second year at Northern Iowa after playing four games for the Panthers as a true freshman in 2025. He was an all-state athlete at City High for the Class of 2025 – playing football, basketball, and baseball.

Sutherland had just been part of a viral moment at a UNI basketball game on February 6 when he and other Panther football players were shown on CBS Sports Network watching the game from a courtside hot tub inside the McLeod Center.

One of Sutherland’s most memorable plays at City High was catching a two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter to help the Little Hawks beat Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 43-42 in September of 2024. Sutherland is shown in IA Football’s shot of the play wishing his “nana” a happy birthday.

Northern Iowa is scheduled to play Iowa at Kinnick Stadium on September 19. The Hawkeyes’ social media accounts shared a tribute to Sutherland on Saturday.
