Moya Brennan, Clannad Co-Founder and Beloved Irish Singer, Passes Away at 73 The music world mourns the loss of Moya Brennan, the iconic voice of Clannad and a foundational figure in Irish traditional music, who passed away peacefully at the age of 73 in her native Gaoth Dobhair, County Donegal. Born Máire Ní Bhraonáin on August 4, 1952, Brennan was the eldest of nine children in a family deeply rooted in Gaelic culture and musical tradition. Her journey began at Leo’s Tavern in Donegal, the family pub that served as both hearth and rehearsal space where she, alongside her brothers Pól and Ciarán and uncles Noel and Pádraig Ó Dúgáin, first shaped the sound that would grow Clannad. Formed in the 1970s, the group emerged from informal sessions into one of Ireland’s most celebrated musical acts, renowned for their steadfast commitment to singing in the Irish language despite cultural pressures of the time. Clannad’s early success included a win at the Letterkenny Folk Festival in 1973, which led to European touring and the release of their self-titled debut album that same year. Their 1982 performance of “Theme from Harry’s Game” on Top of the Pops marked a historic moment as the first time a band sang in Irish on the program, bringing Gaelic melodies to a global audience without compromising their linguistic authenticity. Beyond her work with Clannad, Brennan’s influence extended through her solo career and collaborations, earning her recognition as the “First Lady of Celtic music.” Her contributions were celebrated not only for her distinctive voice and harpistry but also for her role as an ambassador for County Donegal and Irish-language music worldwide. Tributes have poured in from fans, fellow musicians and the community at Leo’s Tavern, where staff expressed that her “spirit will forever remain a cherished part of Leo’s.” She is survived by her husband Tim and her children Aisling, and Paul. Her legacy endures through the timeless music she helped create and the cultural pride she embodied throughout her life.
