Clash Royale’s Comeback: Lessons in Novelty, Accessibility, and Simplification

Clash Royale, Supercell’s decade-old mobile strategy game, experienced a significant resurgence in 2025, following a period of challenges. At the Game Developers Conference (GDC) 2026, Supercell’s Head of Clash Royale, Aleksandar Marković, and Game Design Lead, James Back, detailed the strategies behind this turnaround, focusing on key updates to live operations, monetization, and gameplay.1

Three Core Principles for Success

The team identified three core principles that drove the game’s recovery: introducing novel content, enhancing accessibility for players, and simplifying game systems.1 These principles guided updates from 2021-2025, addressing previous missteps and capitalizing on opportunities for growth.

Adding Novelty Through Card Evolutions

Supercell addressed player churn and confusion by focusing on adding novelty to existing cards rather than requiring players to master entirely fresh ones. The introduction of Card Evolutions proved successful, prompting the creation of a dedicated production pipeline for new Evolutions.1 Initially released monthly, Evolutions were later integrated into the battle pass as an incentive for subscription.

The concept expanded to include Tower Troops and Spells, creating synergistic card combinations that generated viral engagement spikes. Marković noted that these combinations needed to strike a balance between “pay to win and pay to lose” to maintain player interest.1

In 2025, the team matched the volume of new content released during the game’s launch year in 2016, a feat attributed to team growth and improved understanding of player preferences.1

Bold Experiments and Lessons Learned

Supercell experimented with new game modes, including the Goblin Queen’s Journey in 2024, which featured a separate trophy road system. While ambitious, this mode did not result in the desired sustained increase in monthly active users (MAU) and actually caused a temporary dip.1

A more successful addition was Merge Tactics, a streamlined version of the previously soft-launched game, Clash Mini. This demonstrated the importance of thoroughly understanding game modes before integrating them into the core experience.1

Improving Accessibility Through Magic Items

To address issues with progression, particularly for veteran players, Supercell introduced Magic Items. These items allowed players to more directly influence card upgrades, reducing randomness and accelerating progress.1 This change significantly improved retention among returning players and contributed to a rapid increase in daily active users (DAU).1

Events offering free Evolutions, such as the Mega Knight Evolution event in September 2024 and the Barbarian Evolution event in February 2025, further boosted engagement and retention, particularly among core players.1 The latter event, with easier unlock criteria, proved particularly effective in attracting returning players.

Simplifying Systems for a Better User Experience

Supercell focused on simplifying the game’s interface and systems to improve the experience for both new and returning players. This included cleaning up the hub screen and, controversially, removing the Season Shop in March 2025.1

Despite initial player outrage, the team went further, removing the entire Events tab from the main navigation bar, replacing it with a “under construction” placeholder.1 Events were subsequently moved to the main screen’s mode selector, which ultimately led to increased player engagement with game modes.1

Embracing Short-Term Pain for Long-Term Gains

Back emphasized that achieving long-term success requires accepting short-term setbacks and embracing experimentation. He stated that the team needs “the space to try things out, to craft these mistakes, and not be afraid of that short term pain.”1

Supercell’s experience with Clash Royale highlights the importance of continuous iteration, data-driven decision-making, and a willingness to challenge established norms in the competitive mobile gaming landscape.3
