Conan O’Brien Reflects on Tragedy Following Rob Reiner and Wife’s Deaths

Conan O’Brien has spoken publicly about the deaths of director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, expressing profound sadness and emphasizing the tragedy’s impact on their family. The Reiners were found dead in their Los Angeles home on December 14, 2023, just one day after attending a holiday party hosted by O’Brien and his wife, Liza Powel O’Brien.

A Shocking Loss

O’Brien addressed the tragedy in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, published March 9, 2026, stating, “Very simply, we had a party, we invited our really good friends, and then, the next day, this terrible thing happened.” He was quick to deflect attention from the fact that the Reiners had been at his party shortly before their deaths, saying, “Whatever difficulties my wife and I have experienced having our name attached to it are nothing compared to the scale of the tragedy for the family and the loss of Rob and Michele.”

He added, “If you’re a known person, your name is going to gain dragged into things sometimes, but it is not a hardship. There is only sadness that they’re gone.”

Details of the Case

Nick Reiner, the couple’s 32-year-old son, was arrested on the evening of December 14 and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He has since pleaded not guilty, according to reports. The Reiners likewise had two other children, Jake Reiner, 34, and Romy Reiner, 27, as well as Tracy Reiner, 61, from Rob Reiner’s previous marriage with Penny Marshall.

Previous Statements

O’Brien first publicly addressed his shock and grief in an interview with The New Yorker last month. He described the Reiners as “such lovely people” and recounted the surreal experience of saying goodnight to them only to learn of their deaths the following day. “I believe I was in shock for quite a while afterward,” he said. “It’s just so awful.”

O’Brien has not discussed the Reiners’ deaths on his podcast.
