COPD Support Ireland Launches Nationwide Roadshow to Raise Awareness

COPD Support Ireland is hitting the road this month to raise awareness about COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and offer free health screenings across Ireland. The nationwide “COPD & Me Roadshow” will visit Limerick city on Tuesday, November 19th, at the Crescent shopping centre between 9:30 am and 11:30 am, marking World COPD Day.

Understanding the Scope of COPD in Ireland

According to the latest figures, from 2020 to 2022, there were 1,145 hospital admissions in Limerick due to COPD. Shockingly, it is estimated that 380,000 people in Ireland live with COPD, but only 110,000 have received a formal diagnosis. This highlights the importance of awareness and early detection.

Free Spirometry Tests Available at the Roadshow

The COPD & Me Roadshow will feature a team of expert COPD health professionals offering free spirometry tests. Spirometry is a simple and painless breathing test that measures lung function and can identify signs of COPD. A respiratory physiologist will conduct the test, and a specialist healthcare professional will be available to provide health information and guidance on next steps.

Early Diagnosis and Management of COPD**

COPD Support Ireland strongly encourages anyone experiencing ongoing breathlessness and a cough, with or without phlegm, to speak with their GP about getting a spirometry test. They also advise that many GP practices now have direct access to HSE Spirometry Services in their local Integrated Care Hubs.

Consultant Respiratory Physician and Chair of COPD Support Ireland, Associate Professor Stanley Miller, explains, “COPD is best managed with early diagnosis and treatment. While there is no cure, combining expert medical management with self-management strategies can significantly improve the quality of life for people living with COPD.”

COPD Support Ireland: Your Partner in Managing COPD**

General Manager of COPD Support Ireland, Joan Johnston, emphasizes the importance of knowledge and support: “We want people to understand the symptoms of COPD and to seek help if they have concerns. Early diagnosis means we can make a difference in improving quality of life. Too many people are suffering needlessly. COPD Support Ireland is here to assist in your journey. We offer a wealth of information, support services, and resources to help manage COPD.”
