Jesús Corona’s Crucial Role in Mexico’s 2012 Olympic Gold Medal
Mexico’s stunning victory at the 2012 London Olympic Games, securing the gold medal in men’s soccer, remains a landmark achievement in the nation’s sporting history. Whereas the heroics of Oribe Peralta, who scored both goals in the final against Brazil, are widely celebrated, the pivotal role played by goalkeeper Jesús Corona was almost jeopardized by internal disagreements within the coaching staff.
The Goalkeeping Debate
As Mexico prepared for the tournament, a debate arose regarding the selection of the over-23 reinforcement goalkeeper. The options were Jesús Corona, then playing for Ajaccio in France, and Guillermo Ochoa, a prominent figure in Mexican soccer. Nicolás Navarro, the goalkeeping coach at the time, strongly advocated for Corona, believing his skills were superior.
Navarro’s Stand and Internal Opposition
Navarro asserted that Corona’s ability to arrive off his line to cut crosses and his overall grip were key advantages. Yet, his preference for Corona faced resistance from unnamed individuals with ties to previous national team administrations. According to Navarro, a “manager” from a prior era attempted to pressure him into selecting Ochoa. “When I started saying that he attacked everyone,” Navarro explained in a podcast interview. “A member of the national team wanted to force me to seize Guillermo Ochoa to the London 2012 Olympic Games and I refused.”
Support from Key Figures
Fortunately for Navarro, he received crucial support from both José Manuel de la Torre, the coach of the Senior National Team, and Luis Fernando Tena, the Olympic team coach. They empowered Navarro to make the final decision regarding the goalkeeping position. “Memo Ochoa is this one. The one that suits me is Corona,” Navarro recalled. “They told me: you are the goalkeeper coach and you have all the power, we are going to support you. That’s what we all want, to support you.”
Corona’s Performance and the Historic Victory
Corona proved instrumental throughout the tournament, and his presence in goal was vital to Mexico’s success. Mexico defeated Brazil 2-1 in the final at Wembley Stadium on August 11, 2012, claiming their first-ever Olympic gold medal in soccer . Oribe Peralta scored the quickest goal in Olympic history, just 29 seconds into the game, and added another in the 75th minute. Brazil’s Hulk scored a late consolation goal, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Mexico’s lead.
Mexico at the 2012 London Olympics
Mexico competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London with a total of 102 athletes across 23 sports . This victory in men’s soccer was the nation’s first gold medal at the Games and contributed to a total medal count of 8 (1 gold, 3 silver, and 4 bronze), marking Mexico’s most successful Olympic performance outside of a home Games.
