Former Bank of Ireland Executive Denies Legal Fee Accusations in Court

Brendan Mullin, a former managing director of Bank of Ireland Private Bank and a renowned former Ireland rugby international, is facing 15 charges related to alleged theft of over €570,000 from the bank, along with other financial irregularities. In a compelling courtroom drama, the central issue at hand is the alleged assistance provided by the bank in covering Mr. Mullin’s legal fees.

Deliberate Assistance or Misunderstanding?

During his testimony, Roddy Bourke, a litigation partner with McCann Fitzgerald solicitors, representing Mr. Mullin, revealed a heated exchange surrounding the invoicing practices. Mr. Bourke claimed that it was abundantly clear from Mr. Mullin’s instructions that the bank was assisting with his legal fees. He stated this with conviction, stating, “It was obvious from his instructions in the file that he was getting assistance from Bank of Ireland for his legal fees.” However, Mr. Mullin vehemently denied this, insisting that he had informed Mr. Bourke from the outset that all his legal fees were personally funded.

Email Exchanges Shed Light on the Dispute

The court was presented with a series of emails as evidence, further illuminating the contentious situation. Mr. Mullin, in one email after the meeting, called the lawyer’s claim that he indicated the bank would pay some of his fees “not accurate or fair”. He went on to assert in another email, that he was not even aware of the bank’s memo when they discussed it. He claimed the copy he saw was “significantly different” from the final version sent to the bank.

McCann Fitzgerald Firm Stands by its Account

Mr. Bourke countered by stating that Mr. Mullin was fully aware of the contents of the memo and that they had discussed it “line by line”. “His assertion he did not have sight of the memo was complete news to him,” Mr. Bourke declared.

The trial continues before Judge Martin Nolan and a jury, with the central point of contention remaining: Did the Bank of Ireland provide financial support to Brendan Mullin for his legal expenses? The jury must carefully evaluate the evidence and determine the truth behind these allegations.
