The production follows the life of Angelica Pavan, a figure based on historical events from the era of Italian unification. According to the production details, Pavan was born in a Venetian stable during the Napoleonic invasions. The narrative tracks her trajectory from the daughter of “third-category” actors—who traveled from city to city in the 1800s performing Commedia dell’Arte—to an internationally acclaimed diva involved in the Risorgimento.

The play is structured as a prologo and eight distinct “quadri” (tableaus). This format allows the story to jump through fragments of Pavan’s existence, blending comedy and tragedy to explore the thin line between a performer’s real life and their stage persona.
