Cruise Ship Hot Tubs Linked to Legionnaires’ Disease Outbreaks
Passengers seeking relaxation in private balcony hot tubs on luxury cruise ships received a terrifying surprise. A recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) investigation revealed these idyllic retreats as the source of a Legionnaires’ disease outbreak affecting multiple cruise passengers.
Legionnaires’ Disease Strikes on Two Unspecified Cruise Ships
The CDC investigated two unidentified cruise ships between November 2022 and July 2024, uncovering 12 cases of Legionnaires’ disease, a severe form of pneumonia caused by the Legionella pneumophila bacteria. The investigation linked private balcony hot tubs as the likely source of exposure.
The CDC report details the investigation, highlighting the outbreak on “Cruise Ship A” with five cases reported after a November 2022 voyage, growing to eight cases by April 2024. A second outbreak on “Cruise Ship B” followed, with cases reported in January, February, and May 2024. Laboratory testing confirmed the presence of the bacterium in every private hot tub tested on this vessel.
Private Hot Tubs Found to be the Culprit
On “Cruise Ship A,” water samples from private balcony hot tubs tested positive for Legionella bacteria, with some samples showing dangerously high levels.
