Cuba to Release Prisoners Amidst Diplomatic Shifts and Economic Challenges
Havana – The Cuban government announced Thursday night the upcoming release of 51 prisoners, citing a gesture of goodwill and strengthened relations with the Vatican. This move precedes a rare press conference scheduled for Friday, where Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel will address national and international issues.
Prisoner Release Details
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, those being released have served a significant portion of their sentences and have demonstrated good conduct even as incarcerated. The government has not yet disclosed the identities of those to be released, beyond this general description.
This announcement follows a pattern of pardons and releases. Since 2010, the Cuban government reports granting pardons to 9,905 inmates. Over the past three years, approximately 10,000 individuals sentenced to imprisonment have been released.
Recent Releases and Diplomatic Context
In January 2025, Cuba released prominent dissident José Daniel Ferrer as part of a broader government decision to free over 500 prisoners following discussions with the Vatican CiberCuba. Ferrer subsequently left Cuba and is currently residing in the United States.
These releases coincided with the Biden administration’s announcement of its intent to remove Cuba from the list of state sponsors of terrorism CiberCuba.
Political Prisoner Concerns
It remains unclear whether the current planned releases include political prisoners. As of February 2026, the nonprofit organization Prisoners Defenders reported 1,214 political prisoners in Cuba.
Díaz-Canel’s International Engagement
The prisoner release announcement comes as President Díaz-Canel prepares to address the nation and the world. He recently attended the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in July 2025, seeking support for Cuba’s struggling economy CiberCuba, Radio Santa Cruz, Cuba Headlines. Cuba was participating as a “partner country” within the BRICS group, a status allowing attendance but not full membership rights.
