Hanson’s vision extends beyond personal artistic fulfillment. He’s actively working to establish Washington State as a meaningful player in the film industry, challenging the long-held dominance of Los Angeles. “the goal is to cultivate a thriving film scene right here in Washington,” Hanson explains, “to offer opportunities for creatives without the necessity of relocating to established hubs.” This ambition is notably relevant given the increasing costs of production in California. According to FilmLA, on-location film production in Los Angeles County decreased by 8.9% in the first quarter of 2024, signaling a potential shift in industry dynamics.
Hanson’s strategy centers on a genre-focused approach, prioritizing compelling, high-concept stories that can be brought to life efficiently with modest budgets. This allows for quicker project turnaround adn attracts initial investment, laying the groundwork for larger-scale productions. He envisions a model similar to the success of Blumhouse Productions, known for its profitable horror films made on relatively low budgets.
The Central Washington University Experience
The foundation for this enterprising undertaking was laid during Hanson’s time at Central Washington University (CWU), beginning in 2022. A visit to his sister initially drew him to the Ellensburg campus, but it was the vibrant community and the promise of a strong film program that solidified his decision. He quickly integrated into the campus environment, building a network of collaborators and gaining practical experience.”CWU provided an incredible environment for growth,” Hanson reflects.”I was able to promptly start building my portfolio and working on projects, which was invaluable.” He emphasizes the importance of actively engaging with peers, noting that forging connections is key to unlocking opportunities. “don’t hesitate to reach out and collaborate,” he advises aspiring filmmakers. “You’ll discover a wealth of talent and shared passion.”
