Czech Football Rocked by Match-Fixing Scandal: Key Players and Implications
Czech football is reeling from a widespread corruption scandal involving 47 clubs, officials, referees, and players, announced on March 24, 2026. The investigation, initiated by the Czech Football Association (FAČR) and now involving police intervention, centers on allegations of bribery and match-fixing related to sports betting. The scandal comes just days before a crucial World Cup playoff match for the Czech Republic against Ireland.
Key Individuals Implicated
Samuel Šigut – MFK Karviná Midfielder
23-year-vintage Samuel Šigut, currently playing for MFK Karviná, is among those named in the investigation. Transfermarkt details his position as a midfielder, having joined Karviná in January 2025. Šigut was reportedly a potential transfer to Slavia Prague this summer, but that move is now in jeopardy. His activities have been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
Jan Wolf – Owner of MFK Karviná
Jan Wolf, the mayor of Karviná and owner of MFK Karviná, has also been implicated in the scandal.
Miroslav Zelinka and Jan Všetečka – Referees
Experienced referees Miroslav Zelinka and Jan Všetečka are under suspicion. Zelinka is accused of being bribed to manipulate a match between Karvina and České Budějovice in March 2024, using VAR. Všetečka is alleged to have been influenced to favor the home side in the same match for a financial reward. Všetečka also refereed a derby match between Sparta and Slavia this season.
Martin Latka – Co-owner of SFC Opava
Martin Latka, former captain of Slavia Prague, recently became a co-owner of SFC Opava. He is accused of attempting to bribe referees in matches involving Opava, including offering a 200,000 crown bribe for a game against Varnsdorf in February 2023, and a 30,000 crown bribe for a match against Zbrojovka Brno in September of the same year.
Michal Suchý – Player
Michal Suchý, a player with a history of legal issues, is also involved. He has a prior conviction for a large-scale Bitcoin scam, receiving a four-year unconditional sentence in February for defrauding a victim of 4.3 million crowns using counterfeit banknotes.

Investigation and Response
The FAČR initiated the investigation and is cooperating with police. FAČR President David Trunda stated that no members of the association’s leadership are implicated. Radio Prague reports that several dozen individuals have been detained, and searches have been conducted at homes, offices, and other properties. The investigation is focused on offenses relating to sports betting, raising questions about the role of betting sponsorships in Czech football, particularly given that the First League is sponsored by Chance.
The timing of the investigation is particularly sensitive, coming just before the Czech Republic’s crucial World Cup playoff against Ireland. The FAČR maintains that they had no control over the timing of the criminal proceedings.
