Quiz Lady Dagmar Jandová on Leaving Meteorology, Fame, and Family Life
Dagmar Jandová, widely recognized as the formidable “Quiz Lady” from the Czech television competition Na lovu (On the Hunt), has experienced a significant shift in public perception and personal life since joining the indicate. Jandová recently discussed her transition away from her long-held career as a meteorologist, the unexpected impact of television fame, and how she balances her work with family life.
From Meteorology to Quiz Shows
Jandová spent twenty years and several months working as a meteorologist before leaving the profession. She cited the challenges of shift work as a primary factor in her decision. “The main problem was the shift operation – combining it with other activities became more and more difficult,” she explained. Beyond her role on Na lovu, Jandová now dedicates her time to creating quizzes, questions, and board games.
Unexpected Fame and Public Recognition
Jandová admitted she didn’t anticipate the success of Na lovu, noting that the longevity of game shows is often uncertain. Still, she believed the Czech audience would appreciate the format, drawing parallels to the British version of the show. “They have always liked quizzes and competitions, they are playful. And when Ondra Sokol’s humor is added, it’s a great combination that can work,” she said. The show’s popularity has led to frequent recognition from the public.
“Yes, they recognize [me]. I am often asked what the filming is like and what Ondra Sokol is like,” Jandová shared. She also addressed a common initial question from viewers: “At the beginning, they asked a lot if we knew the questions in advance. I think after all these years everyone has understood that we really don’t recognize them beforehand.”
Balancing Work and Family
Jandová’s new work schedule has allowed her to spend more quality time with her daughters, aged eleven and fifteen. “Before, I used to work every other weekend, which bothered me the most and it didn’t combine well with family events. Now I try to devote as much as possible to my daughters although they are worth it,” she stated. She also noted that her previous work arrangement often meant completing work at night, while now she can manage it during the day.
Her daughters are fans of the show, particularly the celebrity specials. “Most of the time they are not at home during the broadcast, but they will watch when they have the chance. They love Superlov and have definitely seen all the celebrity specials. Probably not every episode with me, but they watch it. Of course, sometimes they laugh at some of my mistakes, but they enjoy it.”
Addressing Climate Change and Personal Wellbeing
While acknowledging public discourse surrounding climate change, Jandová clarified her expertise lies in meteorology, not climatology. “I am not a climatologist, but a meteorologist. Climatologists deal with this issue systematically from morning to night, so I don’t have much to say about it. It’s a slightly different field. Anyway, I don’t deny climate change. I know that recent years have been among the warmest on record.”
Jandová also discussed a recent focus on her health and wellbeing, including weight loss. She attributed this to increased physical activity following her departure from her sedentary job as a meteorologist and adjustments to her diet. “I think that played a sizeable role,” she said, noting she’s reduced her consumption of wafers, chocolates, and sandwiches.
