DART Expansion to Kilcock: Kildare Commuters Set for Enhanced Rail Services
Commuters in County Kildare are poised to benefit from a significant upgrade to rail services as the Dart (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) network expands to Kilcock. This marks the first expansion of the electric rail service in over three decades, promising more frequent, reliable, and sustainable transportation options for the rapidly growing town.
Dart+ Programme: A Milestone for Public Transport
The extension to Kilcock is a key component of the Dart+ expansion programme, spearheaded by the National Transport Authority (NTA). NTA Chief Executive Anne Shaw described the project as a “milestone” for both the Dart+ programme and the wider Transport for Ireland (TFI) network [1]. The aim is to provide a realistic and sustainable travel option for more passengers.
Improved Service Frequency and Infrastructure Upgrades
Currently, Kilcock is served by just nine trains each way daily. The Dart expansion, slated for completion by 2031, will dramatically increase service frequency to up to 10 trains per hour during peak times [2]. This improvement will be coupled with several infrastructure upgrades, including:
- A second track between Maynooth and Kilcock.
- An upgraded Kilcock Station, featuring a new platform.
- A fully accessible pedestrian access bridge with lifts.
- Continued Intercity service stops at Kilcock Station.
New Dart Depot West of Kilcock
Coinciding with the service expansion is the planned construction of a new Dart depot located just west of Kilcock. This depot, originally intended to be situated between Maynooth and Kilcock, will be crucial for housing and servicing the carriages used across the entire Dart network [3]. The facility will include:
- A maintenance shed
- An automatic train wash
- A vehicle inspection unit
- Administration offices
- A test track
The depot is expected to create over 100 new jobs when fully operational.
Public Consultation and Railway Order Application
Irish Rail has launched a public consultation period regarding the updated depot location, running from March 16th to April 27th [2]. Following the consultation, the Railway Order plans will be submitted to An Coimisiún Pleanála later in 2026. The Dart+ Depot is targeted for completion in 2031 [3].
Wider Rail Network Improvements
The Kilcock expansion is part of a broader initiative to enhance rail services across the Greater Dublin Area. Irish Rail is too working on extending the Dart to Hazelhatch, Celbridge, and Drogheda, and increasing services to Greystones. The company has ordered 285 new carriages, with a long-term plan to have 750 new carriages in service.
Future Track Doubling
Minister of State Seán Canney highlighted the long-term goal of doubling the track on the rail line between Dublin and Mullingar to accommodate a significantly expanded range of commuter services [1].
