Dave Grohl Opens Up About Grief, Therapy, and New Album

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has recently shared deeply personal reflections on navigating profound loss, seeking therapy, and the creative process behind the band’s upcoming album, Your Favorite Toy. In a candid interview with The Guardian, Grohl detailed his experiences with grief following the deaths of Taylor Hawkins and his mother, as well as addressing a public revelation about fathering a child outside of his marriage.

Navigating Multiple Losses and Seeking Support

Grohl revealed he underwent therapy for an extended period, attending sessions “six days a week for 70 weeks,” totaling over 430 hours. This intensive therapy followed a series of challenging events, including the death of Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins in March 2022 and the passing of his mother just four months later. He also addressed the public disclosure of having fathered a child outside of his marriage in 2024.

The musician explained that experiencing these losses in quick succession was “almost too much to feel.” He acknowledged a pattern of coping with grief by focusing on forward momentum, a strategy he initially employed after the death of Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain. “From the loss of Kurt [Cobain] to the loss of Taylor, I was afraid to sit and actually let those things into my heart,” Grohl stated.

Finding Solace and Re-evaluation Through Therapy

Grohl emphasized the importance of therapy as a means of self-reflection and re-evaluation. He noted that while songwriting often serves as an outlet for processing emotions, he felt a necessitate for deeper conversation and introspection. “I reckon that for many reasons, I wound up in a place that I needed to stop and sit with myself and re-evaluate myself. It’s an ongoing process,” he said.

Addressing the public statement regarding his child, Grohl described the need to “turn everything off,” including concern for public opinion. “Being able to shut off that part of yourself can be sometimes a very healthy exercise in considering life within your immediate radius,” he explained. “Not giving all of that so much currency within yourself that it can completely destroy yourself.” He added that he needed to stop, disconnect, and reconnect with his emotions.

Remembering Taylor Hawkins

Grohl recounted a particularly vivid dream in which he encountered Hawkins, describing the experience as profoundly real. “I fell asleep on a couch…I thought that I’d woken up, and he was sitting right next to me. It was so fucking real. He was happy…The first thing I said was: ‘Oh my God, we miss you so much.’ He smiled. I said, ‘Where are you?’ And he smiled again and said: ‘Dude –’ And I woke up.”

Drummer Changes and New Music

The interview also touched upon the recent changes in the Foo Fighters’ lineup, specifically the departure of drummer Josh Freese after a single tour. Grohl and bassist Nate Mendel declined to delve into the specifics of the situation, stating that a mutual decision was reached. “Some things are OK to be like: this is what’s best for us, and we’re going in a different direction,” Mendel said.

Grohl previously explained to Zane Lowe that moving on from Freese aligned with the band’s history of working with different drummers. He noted that Freese himself felt the band’s music didn’t fully resonate with him, which Grohl considered a valid reason for the change.

Your Favorite Toy and the Future

The Foo Fighters are preparing to release their twelfth studio album, Your Favorite Toy, on April 24. The band recently shared a new song from the album, “Caught in the Echo.”
