David Gilmour’s Black Strat Shatters Auction Record, Selling for $14.55 Million
David Gilmour’s iconic black Stratocaster, the instrument synonymous with Pink Floyd’s signature sound, has achieved a record-breaking sale price of $14.55 million at a Christie’s auction in Latest York. This sale marks the highest price ever paid for a guitar at auction, surpassing the previous record of $6 million for Kurt Cobain’s 1959 Martin D-18E acoustic guitar.
A Legacy in Wood and Strings
The “Black Strat,” as it’s affectionately known, was a cornerstone of Gilmour’s sound throughout Pink Floyd’s most celebrated era and his solo career. It featured prominently on landmark albums such as The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), and The Wall (1979), including the unforgettable solo on “Comfortably Numb.”
From Charity Sale to Record-Breaking Auction
The guitar’s journey to auction is noteworthy. It was initially sold for $3,975,000 in 2019 as part of a Christie’s auction featuring over 120 guitars from Gilmour’s personal collection. Proceeds from that sale benefited ClientEarth, an organization dedicated to environmental law, and protection. Christie’s reported the 2019 auction totaled $21,490,750, becoming the most valuable musical instrument sale in auction history at the time.
The Irsay Collection and a New Owner
The recent sale was part of the auction of the Jim Irsay Collection, following the death of Irsay, the former owner of the Indianapolis Colts, in May 2025. Best Classic Bands reports Irsay originally purchased the Black Strat for $3,975,000 in 2019. The identity of the new owner remains undisclosed.
A Broader Auction of Musical History
The Irsay Collection auction showcased a remarkable array of musical instruments and memorabilia, totaling $84,091,350, not including buyer’s premiums. Other notable sales included:
- A 1964 Rickenbacker owned by John Lennon: $1.27 million
- A 1964 Gibson SG used by George Harrison: $2.27 million
- A one-off Vox made for The Beatles in 1966: $600,000
- Eric Clapton’s “The Fool” Gibson SG: $3 million
- The Fender Mustang played by Kurt Cobain on “Smells Like Teen Spirit”: $6 million
- A Martin 000-42 acoustic guitar used by Eric Clapton on his MTV Unplugged album: $4.1 million
The auction also featured instruments played by Jerry Garcia, Elton John, Prince, Johnny Cash, Janis Joplin, John Coltrane, and Miles Davis, alongside historical Americana and American literature.
Philanthropic Impact
A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the Black Strat will be donated to philanthropic causes, continuing the legacy of charitable giving associated with the instrument. Louder Sound notes that the initial 2019 sale also benefited ClientEarth.
