Debora Silvestri Suffers Broken Ribs in Milan-San Remo Crash

Italian cyclist Debora Silvestri was hospitalized after a serious crash during the women’s Milan-San Remo one-day classic on Saturday, March 21, 2026. The incident involved several riders, with Silvestri falling over a guardrail while attempting to avoid a pile-up.

Details of the Crash

The crash occurred on the descent of the Cipressa climb, approximately 20km from the finish of the 156km race. Silvestri, riding for Laboral Kutxa-Fundación Euskadi, lost control while trying to avoid other fallen riders, including Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney and Kim Le Court-Pienaar BBC. She was projected over a roadside barrier and fell several meters.

Silvestri’s Condition and Recovery

Silvestri was conscious when transported to the hospital. She later announced on Instagram that she had broken five ribs and sustained a microfracture to her shoulder, stating, “could be worse.” BBC. In the men’s race, Tadej Pogacar secured victory despite his own crash approximately 30km from the finish. He overcame scrapes and cuts to his leg and defeated Tom Pidcock by half a wheel’s length BBC. Mathieu van der Poel also crashed but managed to rejoin the peloton.
