Muntjac Deer Challenges Rhino at Wrocław Zoo
Wrocław, Poland – A remarkable display of bravado was captured at the Wrocław Zoo, where a diminutive male muntjac deer, weighing approximately 13 kilograms (28 pounds), boldly challenged Maruśka, a rhinoceros weighing 1.7 tonnes (3,748 pounds). The incident, wich occurred on January 9, 2026, has garnered attention online and provided zoo veterinarians with an prospect to explain the deer’s unusual behavior.
The zoo shared a video of the encounter, accompanied by a lighthearted comment: “Someone forgot to look in the mirror this morning!” The footage shows the small deer actively approaching and even attempting to charge the significantly larger rhino.
According to zoo veterinarians, the muntjac’s behavior is linked to its mating season. “His partner is in heat, and the male is overflowing with testosterone,” explained a zoo spokesperson. “he needs to let off some steam and demonstrate dominance, even if his training partner weighs 1.7 tons.” The veterinarians also commended maruśka for her patience throughout the interaction.
The muntjac, also known as the barking deer, is a small deer species native to southeastern China and Taiwan. Typically, they stand around 50 centimeters (20 inches) tall at the shoulder and are characterized by their reddish-brown coat. Despite their small size, male muntjacs can exhibit surprisingly assertive behavior, notably during the breeding season.
