Delhi Considers Aspiring Tunnel Project to Alleviate Congestion and Pollution
Delhi, a sprawling metropolis with over 33,000 kilometers of roadways, consistently ranks among the world’s moast congested cities. this chronic gridlock doesn’t just frustrate commuters; it substantially contributes to deteriorating air quality, increased fuel waste, and a higher incidence of traffic accidents. Recent data indicates that Delhi experiences ‘poor’ or worse air quality for over 40% of the year, a trend observed consistently since 2022, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). To combat this escalating crisis, a groundbreaking infrastructure project is under consideration.
Exploring an Underground Solution: The Talkatora-Gurugram Tunnel
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Nitin Gadkari, has revealed that his ministry is actively evaluating the feasibility of constructing a major tunnel connecting Talkatora Stadium in Delhi to Gurugram.A specialized consultant has already been engaged to conduct a comprehensive study of the project’s viability.
The proposed tunnel, currently in the research and planning phases, aims to drastically reduce travel time between these two key locations. Currently, a journey spanning approximately 28-30 kilometers – depending on the chosen route – can easily consume an hour or more during peak hours. Officials estimate that the tunnel could possibly shorten this commute to a mere 10-15 minutes. This represents a significant advancement, comparable to the time savings achieved with the Chenani-Nashri Tunnel in Jammu & Kashmir, which reduced travel time by over 40 minutes.
Addressing Delhi’s Air Quality Crisis
Beyond easing traffic flow, the tunnel project is envisioned as a crucial step towards improving Delhi’s notoriously poor air quality. The city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) frequently reaches ‘severe’ levels, posing significant health risks to residents. To understand the severity,an AQI reading of 0-50 is considered ‘good’,while readings above 400 are classified as ‘severe’. By reducing congestion, the tunnel is expected to lower vehicle emissions, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment. Gadkari emphasized this dual benefit, stating the project’s goal is to simultaneously alleviate traffic jams and combat air pollution.
More detailed projections regarding travel time reductions and environmental impact will be available upon completion of the ongoing feasibility study. morth has indicated that further, significant road infrastructure improvements are planned for the Delhi region, signaling a commitment to long-term solutions for the city’s transportation challenges.
