Delhi’s air quality has plummeted, prompting concerns about the health risks, particularly for children. Following Diwali, the air quality index (AQI) has soared above 400 in several areas, prompting authorities to consider closing schools once again.
Doctors warn that breathing in polluted air poses a serious threat to everyone, especially vulnerable populations like children.
Delhi’s battle with pollution intensifies during October and November, with AQI levels frequently exceeding 300, and sometimes even reaching alarming highs of 400. Children and adults alike are experiencing health consequences. Many offices have implemented work-from-home arrangements, and a “pollution break” plan, involving school closures, is being contemplated.
Schools reopened on November 4 after Diwali holidays, but authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Chhath Puja, celebrated on November 7, will likely see schools closed, with potential closures extending for a week. Delhi Chief Minister Atishi has declared a government holiday for Chhath Puja.
Schools have resumed classes, but assemblies, outdoor activities, and PT classes have been suspended. Children are advised to wear masks, and parents are urged to limit outdoor exposure. Last year, Delhi NCR witnessed a similar scenario, implementing a “pollution break” and shifting to online classes.
With air quality remaining hazardous, Delhi’s schools are facing a difficult decision. Will they prioritize children’s health and education, or succumb to the toxic environment? Stay tuned for updates on this evolving situation.
